Morning 10:00 Bible Study
The bible is an adult
book, and this is an adult study. We
do not pull punches, avoid the hard parts, gloss over problems, or pick
and choose. We attempt to read
the bible as much like the original audience would have read it – in
their time and place. This
means work. We do not speak
their language (Hebrew or Greek). We
do not live in their context of ancient Middle Eastern empires.
We do not share their world views on so many things from food to
stars. We do not even write
the way they wrote, so reading what they wrote is a challenge.
It is not easy, but after the hard work is done, but pay-off is amazing.
When we see the text with open eyes, it amazes us – with its
power and beauty, with its rich insight, and with its stark realism.
But we do not stop there,
with a rich, complex ancient text. We
struggle to make the transition from then to now, from what it meant to
what it means, from interesting to challenging.
We take the bible seriously, not simply.
Are you up for this? Try it.
Starting in January
we will study the book of Romans.
Prerequisites:
None.
We do not assume that you already studied this before.
You do not need to be able to find Joel or to identify Methuselah.
You do not need to be able to find Babylon on a map or name the
kings of Israel. All you have
to do is come ready to read the text and dig into it with us, together, as
an adult-learner.
Teacher:
Steven Kurtz taught bible
for over a decade at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Osijek,
Croatia as a missionary of the Presbyterian Church, where he was an
instructor in biblical studies, directed the Masters Degree program which
was accredited through Leeds University in England, and had terms as Dean
of Students and Academic Dean. He
brings that experience to bear on the bible studies he teaches.
He has a passion for teaching lay-people to know and understand the
bible in the context of this complex world.
Our bible studies are free and open to everyone.
We will supply a bible for you, but bringing your own is even
better.
We have no “enrollment” - you can jump in at any time.
We meet on Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. for one hour, except for holidays.
