Frequently Asked
Questions
Who is welcome in
worship?
Everyone is welcome in
worship - no exceptions. We are all loved by God, and we all need to hear
that message often.
What is the worship
service like?
We have two services
each Sunday morning which are quite different in style. Both include music,
prayer, scripture and a biblically based talk (sermon) which applies the
Bible to our lives. Both last around an hour.
Contemporary Worship,
8:30 a.m. uses modern music, some video, and a more relaxed style (seating
is at tables, coffee is available) and every week the Lord’s Supper is
celebrated (all Christians are invited).
Traditional Worship at
10:45 will be familiar to you if you have worshiped at other Presbyterian
churches. We follow a pattern of worship (liturgy). We use traditional
hymns, inspiring choir anthems, and use several written responses. The Lord’s
Supper (Communion) is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month and on
Christian holidays (all Christians are invited).
How should I dress
for worship?
Contemporary Worship:
dress is casual - come as you are.
Traditional Worship:
varies. Some people wear "Sunday best," others dress more
casually. We recognize that Gulf Shores is a recreation destination, and we
welcome vacationers who left their "Sunday clothes" back home.
What about
children?
Child care is always
available in our nursery, but children are welcome to stay for worship too.
Contemporary Worship:
children are welcome and may find this service easy to like.
Traditional Worship:
we have a "moment with the children" (children’s message) at
which children are invited to come to the front and sit on the steps of the
chancel with the pastor who talks and prays briefly with them.
If I visit, will I
be singled out?
No. You will be
greeted at the door. You may be invited to wear a name tag but only if you
wish to. We do not ask visitors to stand or otherwise single them out (with
one tiny exception). In the winter season we receive many visitors from the
North. We want them to feel welcome and to get to know each other while they
are here, so in Jan. and Feb. at the start of the Traditional service we
invite those who are attending for the first time this season to stand and
say their name and home state if they wish to.
Will I be contacted
after my visit?
You will have an
opportunity to sign the guest registry, and if you leave a phone number or
email address then the pastor will contact you to thank you for your visit.
After that, you will not be contacted unless you ask to be.
How can I get to
know people?
Come join us in
addition to Sunday morning worship:
Try a Sunday
School class: we offer 3 different adult classes as well as children’s
Sunday School at 9:45 a.m.. All of them are friendly and welcoming, and no
one is ever put on the spot or asked personal questions.
Join us on Wednesday
evenings for supper (5:30) and a short (30 minute) encouraging time
of prayer, reflection, scripture and singing in the Fellowship Hall - the
atmosphere is casual, but spiritual.
Come to Thursday
morning Bible Study (10:00 - 11:00) led by pastor Steven. These
studies are in depth, but not invasive to you. Check out a video to get the
idea.
